Today, I thought I’d look into whether or not the Twins should trade their extra Starter. I think the thing that should be kept in mind is that we don’t really have many good minor league prospects who are good starting pitchers. Kyle Gibson is probably the most ready of the prospects. However, I think he needs another year in the minors. The next best one is Alex Wimmers, who is a few years away from even being considered for a starting job in the majors. This tells me that it may not be in the best interest of the Twins to trade their extra starter right now. Keeping a sixth starter on the club in the bullpen means an insurance policy for the Twins in case of an injury.
Last week, it was reported that three scouts from the Torronto Blue Jays were at the b game when Justin Morneau made his first appearance in any game action since July 7 of last year. The scouts were watching Kevin Slowey pitch. I thought I’d take a look at some possible right handed relievers from the Blue Jays bullpen with some of their stats since it would make sense to include a reliever in a package for the extra starter. I didn’t include those pitchers that signed with the Jays last offseason.
Shawn Camp is a 35 year old right handed relief pitcher. He’s pitched for three different teams beginning with the Kansas City Royals back in 2004. Last year with the Blue Jays, he appeared in 70 games with an ERA of 2.99 with 46 KS and 18 bases on balls in 72 1/3 innings. In his career, he’s pitched in 365 games with a 19-23 record with an ERA of 4.44. It should be noted that he’s only had three seasons where his ERA was below 4 for the season.
Another possible candidate the Twins could get from the Blue Jays is Jason Frasor, a 33 year old right handed relief pitcher. Last season for the Jays, he posted a 3.68 ERA in 63 2/3 innings of pitching. He had a 3/4 record with 65 ks and 27 bases on balls. In his 7 year career with the Jays, HE’S POSTED A 3.76 ERA in 411 appearances.
These are good solid relief pitchers. However, I’m not convinced that the Twins are definitely going to trade for one of them. What I will say is, if the Twins think it is in their best interest to trade their extra starter, they will.
